Ways to find community quickly after your move.
A church-dense county
Moore County has a high concentration of congregations for its size, spanning Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Catholic, Lutheran, non-denominational and other traditions, with the largest concentrations in Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen and Carthage and smaller rural congregations throughout. Many newcomers find their first local social circle through a congregation rather than a neighborhood, particularly retirees and military families who arrive without an existing network.
Civic and volunteer life
Service clubs, garden and historical societies, arts organizations, veterans groups, equestrian associations, and hospital and school volunteer programs are all active here, and they are unusually easy to join — a county this size runs on volunteers. FirstHealth, the county's schools, and local arts and historical organizations including the Weymouth Center and the Tufts Archives are common entry points. Military families will also find veteran and spouse networks that bridge the county and the installation.
How to plug in quickly
Pick two things in your first month: one that meets weekly and one that meets monthly. Visit two or three congregations rather than committing to the first, since size and style vary widely between the village churches and the rural ones. Contact organizations directly for current meeting times — small-organization schedules change and are not always posted accurately online. If you have a specific tradition, denomination, or language need, ask locally; the county is more varied than a web search suggests.
