A balanced look at two very different daily rhythms in the same county.
Two towns, ten minutes apart, genuinely different
Pinehurst was laid out in 1895 as a planned resort village on an Olmsted design, and it still moves at resort pace: curving streets, a compact historic Village designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996, and social life centered on clubs and homes rather than sidewalks. Southern Pines is a working town with the county's only truly walkable downtown, an active rail line running through the middle of Broad Street, independent retail and breweries, and horse country on its eastern edge. Both are beautiful. They ask for different lives.
Housing, golf, and walkability
Pinehurst offers 1920s and 1930s cottages in the historic core, brick ranches, golf villas, and gated club enclaves such as CCNC and Forest Creek — with Pinehurst Resort's eleven courses, The Cradle, and No. 2's U.S. Open history anchoring the golf culture through membership tiers. Southern Pines runs to Craftsman bungalows near downtown, generous mid-century lots, modern farmhouse new construction, and equestrian property, with three classic Donald Ross courses nearby — Pine Needles, Mid Pines, and Southern Pines Golf Club, plus Talamore. Walkability strongly favors downtown-adjacent Southern Pines; Pinehurst's walkable ring is small, though the Village permits golf carts on its own streets.
Who fits best
Pinehurst tends to suit buyers who want quiet, order, and beauty, who will build life around golf or a club, and who work in or near FirstHealth — the hospital, Reid Heart Center, and cancer center are all in the village. Southern Pines tends to suit buyers who want to walk to dinner and coffee, who ride or want land east of town, who commute to Fort Bragg via US 1 and NC 211, and who like a train horn as part of the soundtrack. Compare the two side by side and then drive both at your real weekday hours.
What to verify
School assignment is by address through the Moore County Schools locator in both towns, not by town name. Municipal tax rates differ — Pinehurst adopted $0.22 per $100 and Southern Pines $0.29 for FY2026-27 — on top of the county's $0.29 and the rural fire service tax. Golf access structures differ sharply between the resort, the private clubs, and the daily-fee courses, so settle how you intend to play before you choose a neighborhood.
