Moore County's healthcare centers on a 402-bed regional referral hospital in Pinehurst — unusual depth for a county this size.

A regional referral hospital in a small county

FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst is a 402-bed, not-for-profit acute care hospital that serves as the referral center for a 15-county region of the Carolinas. That is the single most important healthcare fact about Moore County: for a county of this population, the depth of specialty care available without leaving town is unusual, and it is a major reason retirees and medical professionals move here. The campus sits on Memorial Drive in Pinehurst, minutes from most village addresses.

Heart, cancer, and neurosurgery

The FirstHealth Reid Heart Center is a dedicated heart and vascular campus in Pinehurst on Page Road North, with cardiology and heart failure services. The FirstHealth Cancer Center, a four-story 120,000-square-foot facility, opened in March 2023 on the Moore Regional campus and consolidates outpatient cancer services, palliative care and clinical research in one building. FirstHealth also operates a Neurosurgery and Spine practice in Pinehurst. For most specialty needs, the referral path stays inside the county.

The wider FirstHealth network

FirstHealth is licensed for four hospitals totaling 546 beds across Pinehurst, Troy, Raeford and Rockingham: Moore Regional in Pinehurst, Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond in Rockingham, Moore Regional Hospital-Hoke in Raeford, which opened in 2013, and Montgomery Memorial Hospital in Troy. That network matters if you settle at the county's edges — Robbins residents often find Troy convenient, and Hoke serves the corridor toward Fayetteville and Fort Bragg.

Primary care, urgent care, and distance

Primary care practices, specialty clinics and urgent care are distributed through Pinehurst, Southern Pines and the Aberdeen corridor, so routine care rarely requires a long drive from the southern half of the county. The picture changes on the west and north sides: from Seven Lakes, West End, Carthage or Robbins, the hospital is a real drive, and rural emergency response times are longer than in town. If health needs are central to your move, time the drive from any address you are considering, at the hour you would actually make it.

What to verify yourself

Confirm that your specific plan is in network with FirstHealth and with the individual practices you intend to use — hospital participation and physician participation are separate questions. Ask any practice whether it is accepting new patients and what the wait is for a first appointment; in a growing retirement market that wait can be months. If a specific service level or designation matters to your decision, ask the hospital directly rather than relying on a third-party summary.
