Assignment is by address through the district's online locator — not by town. Here is how the system works and what to verify.
Assignment is by address, not by town
Moore County Schools does not publish plain-text attendance boundary descriptions. Instead the district provides an online address lookup and school locator, and that tool is the only reliable answer for a specific home. This matters more here than in many counties because Moore County is geographically large and the towns sit near boundary lines — Whispering Pines and Carthage in particular can feed differently street to street. Never rely on a listing, a builder, or a neighbor for assignment. Look up every address you are serious about, and look it up again if you are buying a year later.
The three high schools
Moore County Schools operates three traditional high schools: Pinecrest, which serves the Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen side of the county; Union Pines, which serves the eastern communities including Vass and Cameron; and North Moore, which serves the county's north end around Robbins. Each has its own athletics, arts and academic program profile, and the schools differ in size. If a particular program matters to your family, contact the school directly and ask about enrollment and offerings for the year your child will actually attend.
Private and charter options
The O'Neal School in Pinehurst is an independent day school. Sandhills Classical Christian School has its K-12 campus at 1487 Rays Bridge Road in Whispering Pines, with separate preschool campuses in Pinehurst (6 Carter Street) and Southern Pines (Christ Fellowship, 1425 Midland Road); it offers a distinctly Christian and classical program. Moore Montessori Community School, also in Southern Pines, is a tuition-free public charter school serving K-8 — it is a public charter, not a private school, and enrollment works through a lottery rather than admissions. Application timelines for all three run well ahead of the school year, so if you are relocating on orders or a job start date, contact them early.
Childcare and preschool
Licensed centers, church-based preschools and in-home providers are concentrated in Southern Pines, Pinehurst and Aberdeen, with much thinner coverage in Whispering Pines, Seven Lakes, West End, Cameron and Robbins. Waitlists for infant care are the tightest. North Carolina's Division of Child Development and Early Education, part of NC DHHS, publishes a searchable child care facility database with licensing status and inspection history — use it for any provider you consider, including in-home care.
Questions worth asking
Ask the district: what is the current assignment for this exact address, and is any boundary study underway. Ask the school: what is the bus route and ride time from this neighborhood. Ask private and charter schools: what are the application deadlines, and is there a waitlist at my child's grade. Ask a childcare provider: what is the current license status, when was the last inspection, and how long is the waitlist for my child's age group. If you are a military family, the installation school liaison office can help with records and Interstate Compact protections.
