Services, social life, and support for retirees.

Why retirees choose Moore County

Two reasons dominate. The first is healthcare depth: FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst is a 402-bed regional referral center for a 15-county area, with the Reid Heart Center, a cancer center that opened in 2023, and neurosurgery and spine care on or beside the same campus — unusual for a county this size. The second is that the recreation is built in: golf across eleven resort courses and several private and community clubs, walking trails and preserves, lakes in Whispering Pines and Seven Lakes, and a walkable downtown in Southern Pines.

Matching the community to the stage

Low-maintenance living concentrates in Pinehurst villas and townhomes and in Aberdeen townhome communities. Walkable, car-optional living means downtown-adjacent Southern Pines. Amenity-and-gate living at a lower price means Seven Lakes or Whispering Pines, with the trade being a longer hospital drive. Land and quiet means West End or the north county, where emergency response times are longer — a real consideration as needs change. Time the drive from any address to FirstHealth at the hour you would actually make it.

Taxes and the budget

North Carolina taxes retirement income at the flat state rate but does not tax Social Security benefits. Property tax is the county's $0.29 per $100 for FY2026-27 plus a municipal rate — from $0.22 in Pinehurst (FY2026-27) to roughly $0.555 in Cameron (confirm with the Town) — plus the rural fire service tax, and vehicles are billed with registration renewal. North Carolina also offers property tax relief programs for qualifying older and disabled homeowners, including a homestead exclusion and a circuit breaker deferment; eligibility is income-based and applications run through the county tax office on an annual calendar.

Services and community

The county's senior services, town recreation programs, library branches, Sandhills Community College continuing education, and a deep bench of volunteer organizations make it straightforward to build a routine quickly. Ask practices whether they are accepting new Medicare patients and what the first-appointment wait is, since a growing retirement market stretches those schedules. Confirm current tax relief program requirements and deadlines with the Moore County Tax Department, and verify any plan's network participation with both the hospital and the individual practices you intend to use.
